The New Kid

Being in the music business these days is a little like parenting in real life. Just when you think you know what you’re doing, your kid has grown into some new phase or stage and suddenly it seems you don’t know nearly enough about what to do next. Meanwhile, the kid, your child, the one you love dearly, is driving you insane. But as a parent, you know that you can and you will and you should hang on and hang in and figure out what works for you and for your child. The music business has become an unruly kid… filled with promise and potential, but needing much guidance, much patience, and some boundaries with meaningful contexts.
Artists, industry professionals, and fans are all attempting to define how to relate to the new music business. Music has grown into a phase that must be tended to differently both ethically and socially. On the ethical side, we are all being challenged to make decisions about the worth of and compensation for music. Socially and technologically, the places where we find and share music are changing constantly and so, the spaces and circumstances where music moves into and through our lives are also evolving. All the new possibilities can be so overwhelmingly and simultaneously exciting and confounding. As more and more music is made, where to go and who to trust with our musical time and money becomes more important.
In the coming weeks, Red Pill will be moving forward with a new business model. What I have said for most of the past year will continue to be true. We are a label that cannot be labeled as a label. What we are becoming and hope to be is an artist facilitation firm. Our goal is to deliver the means and methods that will successfully bring great musicians and great fans together. Really, could there be a better job description for a musical Jewish mother?
While the business architecture of Red Pill is changing, the core mission and ethic remains the same: that great music deserves to be made, deserves to be heard, and deserves to be supported. Jacob Detering and I have always been and will continue to be committed to providing artists with supportive, sustainable and collaborative means to create their best work. So, once again, as I often say, just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to raise up the best music.
To all the fans who have welcomed our artists into their lives, we thank you. There simply are not words adequate enough to describe the gratification that comes from being a small part of connecting something as magical as music with those who love and appreciate it. Please know that we will continue to do all we can to bring great music forward and into your lives.
Happy New Year to you all!
